PENTECOST
2007
design for liturgical banner
132 x 80 in.
collection:  First Baptist Church Greenville SC

ARTIST'S STATEMENT
When I was invited to submit a design for a Pentecost banner for First Baptist Church, Greenville South Carolina, I was elated.  For years I had been wanting an opportunity to make an object for Sacred Space, as well as to work in a collaborative project; in this case, it was with Cathy and Tom Atkinson, who crafted the banner.

The white form at the top represents the dove of the Spirit as well as the holy Fire at Pentecost.  The labyrinth of three fish, with the gold glyph that defines the dove's head, represent the burning bush of Moses, as well as the three post-resurrection meals Jesus shared with his disciples.  The color green is included because this congregation displays the banner through the liturgical season of Ordinary Time.
