ARTIST'S STATEMENT
In the spring of 2009, First Baptist Church, Greenville, South Carolina, invited me to submit a design for a sculptural work to be placed in their new youth ministry activities building.
Apart from the size, which was dictated by the space the piece would occupy, the only constraints set by the client were to use all the keys that had been donated by members of the congregation during their "Opening New Doors" capital campaign, and to include text of scripture passages that had been printed in their campaign brochure.
The final design incorporates scripture, keys, and assorted small detritus from the building construction. The form is a sort of deconstructed Celtic cross, and reflects the shapes in the interior and exterior stonework of the building.
The liberty granted the artist by the client allowed this project, which I would have expected to take about a year to complete, to be finished within three months, in time for their building dedication on September 23rd, 2009. The initial maquette (right) was approved immediately upon submission, and is now in the private collection of a member of the congregation. Although each step of the design and fabrication was photographed and shared with the client, they required no additional visual presentations until the final work was submitted for approval.
This has been one of those rare projects, where, from the start, artist and client were able to claim a common vision.
