ARTIST'S STATEMENT
When my beloved eucalyptus tree had to be cut down several years ago, I saved as much of the wood as possible, hoping that in time some of it might be put to worthy use. When GAIHN asked me to make a piece to serve as a symbol of their ministry, I chose to use a section of the trunk of the eucalyptus, which had welcomed visitors to my door for eightteen years, and had stood for many more years than that before I came to live here.
The wood was still green when it was carved, so cracked and checked considerably as it seasoned. The cracks were fitted and filled with pieces of walnut, cedar and cherry.
